Cumbia Cumbia (different estilos)

Cumbia comes from Colombia, its roots planted in indigenous as well as African beats. (1, 2) This traditional cumbia is played with percussion instruments, and of course with time cumbia, like with other Latin music genres, added such instruments as the accordion, horns, and the electric bass.

The way I know how to dance cumbia, to most cumbia styles that developed since its inception, is to its beat that to me is the common denominator between different countries and styles taking up cumbia and adding to their own music. It's 1-2-3-(4), with the 4th beat as a pause, and more commonly discernible by the bass. Here's a how-to for basic steps, then put those moves with these ladies, and that's how I've (seen it) done.

Different styles of cumbia:

LOS PIBES CHORROS -ANDREA (cumbia villera from Argentina)

(I was going to link to Carlos Tevez dancing/singing cumbia, but as it's a form of torture, I couldn't unleash it on unsuspecting people)

ANICETO MOLINA -EL CAMPANERO (from Colombia, also super popular in El Salvador; accordion)

(**which leads to.. krunk kumbia.. and a remix of the song above here.)
(there's also cumbia tribal, which is not much like cumbia)

LA SONORA DINAMITA -CAPULLO Y SORULLO (like big band cumbia, from Colombia)

MARACAIBO 15 -AMPARITO (cumbia by a gaita group from Maracaibo, Venezuela)

KUMBIA KINGS -AZUCAR (Tex-Mex origins, Tejano-style; the founder of the group is Selena's brother, which hints at explaining any similarities you might hear in their early work)

CELSO PINA FT. CONTROL MACHETE and BLANQUITO MAN -CUMBIA SOBRE EL RIO (this song is very popular, as it mixes Celso Pi~na's accordion sounds with Control Machete's rap and Blanquito Man's reggae. Celso Pi~na is Colombian, Control Machete from Mexico, and Blanquito Man is Venezuelan and the voice of King Chango)

EL GRAN SILENCIO -EL CHUNTARO STYLE (El Gran Silencio is a rock group from Monterrey, Mexico, known for this cumbia song as well as this)

(this song makes me want dance in circles, swiveling my hips)

TODOS TUS MUERTOS + LOS AUTENTICOS DECADENTES -GENTE QUE NO (a cumbia remix of Todos Tus Muertos' original. Both groups hail from Argentina and are more known for their punk + reggae + ska styles)

CAIFANES -LA NEGRA TOMASA (Caifanes became Jaguares, the band name under which they are now more famous. Hailing from Mexico City, they are more known for their rock songs)

BERSUIT VERGARABAT -VA POR EL CHAPULTEPEC (from Argentina, one of my all-time favorites. They are known for incorporating many Latin American styles of music into their own sound, which is primarily rock.)
